The alternate permanent representative of Venezuela to the United Nations, Ambassador Joaquín Pérez Ay, highlighted the historic political support and firm solidarity of the South American nation with the peoples under occupation and colonial rule, and ratified the call for urgent and practical measures to advance the incomplete task of decolonization and the need for a renewed commitment by the international community to these just causes.

During his participation in the annual seminar organized by the United Nations Special Committee on Decolonization (C-24), held in the city of Dili, East Timor, the Venezuelan diplomat urged the UN to remain a central, active and coordinated force in support of Non-Self-Governing Territories.

He stressed the importance of providing adequate assistance, especially in terms of capacity building, of continuing public information campaigns and of advancing efforts to safeguard the natural resources of these territories.

Citing resolution 79/115 of the United Nations General Assembly, promoted by Venezuela, Pérez Aycalled for redoubling efforts to raise awareness of the root causes and long-term effects of colonialism, including its new forms.

He stressed that the international community must not allow history to judge it for not having acted when it was most necessary, especially on issues related to the unfinished agenda of decolonization, which has lasted for too many years .

The Venezuelan ambassador indicated that decolonization is not only a historical responsibility, but a moral imperative that requires urgency, political will and global solidarity. “As long as there are peoples subject to colonial domination, the work of the United Nations will be incomplete, ” he said.

He added that “it's time to move from statements to facts; from resolutions to concrete and tangible results; from promises to significant progress.”
