A Venezuelan delegation, composed of 5 young people, is in the Federal Territory of Sirius, located in Sochi, Russia, participating in the International Open Biology Olympiad (OIBO) 2026.

According to a press release, our country is the only participant from the entire region of America and the Western Hemisphere in this demanding global contest, where it will be measured against Asian, African and Eurasian powers.

The national delegation, represented by Angelina Ferrer, 17 years old (Zulia) —recognized as the one millionth scientific seedbed—; Yeviángel Sánchez, 16 years old (Falcón); Gabriela Montilla, 18 years old (Yaracuy); Matheo Marín, 14 years old (Miranda) and Luis Bermúdez, 16 years old (Caracas), will take up the challenge of facing theoretical rounds, two practical specialized laboratory phases and the presentation of an innovative group biotechnological project.

In the area of the competition, which will run until May 22, the Venezuelan delegation will interact in a multilingual environment where the predominant languages will be English and Russian.

For one week, this scientific event brings together brilliant young minds in the areas of biology, biotechnology and modern research. In this edition, delegations from different parts of the world come together to strengthen ties of cooperation and knowledge.

The host country will receive delegations from more than 15 nations from different continents, including Abkhazia, Saudi Arabia, Armenia, Bangladesh, Cambodia, Indonesia, Kazakhstan, Kyrgyzstan, Myanmar, South Ossetia, South Africa, Thailand, Tajikistan, Turkey, Uzbekistan and, representing all of Latin America, the Bolivarian Republic of Venezuela.

The 2026 edition of the International Open Biology Olympiad transcends the academic competition; it presents itself as an invaluable platform for cultural exchange, collaboration between young researchers and the creation of innovative scientific networks aimed at solving the biological challenges of the future.
