Within the framework of World Nutrition Week 2026, representatives of the National Institute of Nutrition (INN) of Venezuela held technical meetings in Rome, Italy, with José Rosero Moncayo, director of the Statistics Division of the United Nations Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO), and Nancy Aburto, deputy director of the organization's Food and Nutrition Division, with the objective of exchanging experiences on nutritional information systems, food education and measurement of diet quality.

The Venezuelan delegation was composed of Ever Gutiérrez, Deputy Technical Director of the INN, and Denny Molina, Director of Education at the institution, who presented the country's progress in generating statistical information for the formulation of public policies.

During the meetings, they presented the incorporation of the Minimum Dietary Diversity methodology into the National Statistical and Geographic System, a tool that evaluates the quality of diet in homes and generates key data for monitoring vulnerable groups, especially women and children. The application of this indicator, adopted by the INN, strengthens evidence-based decision-making.

In addition, advances in food and nutrition education within the national education system were presented, through pedagogical content and tools that promote healthy habits, adequate food selection and a culture based on food sovereignty from an early age.

Another highlight was the inclusion of breast milk in the national food register and in the Food Balance Sheet as a pioneering initiative that recognizes its energy and nutritional contributions within the national food system. In addition to making visible the social value of breastfeeding, the project quantifies its economic impact, since it reduces family spending on infant formula and highlights the historical contribution of women to the country's development.

The meetings were accompanied by Ambassador Marilyn Di Luca Santaella, permanent representative of Venezuela to United Nations agencies in Rome. Their participation strengthened the work agenda and strengthened technical cooperation with FAO.

Finally, the authorities agreed on the importance of strengthening information systems and measurement methodologies.

The meeting made visible Venezuela's innovative contribution to the international debate, promoting the exchange of good practices to consolidate healthier, more sustainable and inclusive food systems.
