In the spaces of the Emil Friedman School in Caracas, the Venezuelan Symphony Orchestra (OSV) will hold a gala concert this Saturday, February 28, in homage to maestro Gonzalo Castellanos Yumar, the leading figure in composition and direction in the country.
According to information from Venezolana de Televisión, the event, which will begin at 5:00 in the afternoon, with free admission, represents a historic milestone for the institution, since 2026 marks the centenary of the birth of someone who was one of the fundamental pillars of the Venezuelan musical heritage.
Under the baton of maestro Alfonso López Chollet, the evening will offer a sound journey that merges Venezuelan innovation with classical tradition:
• Fun for Small Orchestra and Concurrent Piano (1973): A piece that demonstrates Castellanos' mastery of intertwining modern languages with traditional elements.
• Crepuscular Islands (1976): Short cantata for baritone voice and double quintet, with the special participation of the soloist Gaspar Colón Moleiro, renowned for his lyrical depth.
• Symphony No. 2 in D major, Op. 36 (Ludwig van Beethoven): In closing, the OSV will perform this masterpiece that exudes optimism and majesty, written by the German genius in a period of great personal challenges.
The Venezuela Symphony Orchestra extends an open invitation to all audiences and music enthusiasts to immerse themselves in this free sound experience.
Gonzalo Castellanos Yumar, teacher Vicente Emilio Sojo's favorite student, maintained an indissoluble bond with the OSV. During his tenure as principal conductor (1966-1978), the orchestra experienced a period of intense modernization and dynamism that consolidated its international prestige. This tribute seeks to highlight their vast contribution and a legacy that has marked multiple generations of musicians.
