Venezuela marked a milestone with the participation of five young people in the International Biology Olympiad, held in Sochi, Russian Federation, in the Sirius Federal District, from May 15 to 22, a cutting-edge ecosystem aimed at researching and caring for young talents.

This delegation represented our country's first official participation in this academic event, which brought together representatives from 17 countries, mostly from the Eurasian region. Venezuela was the only nation representing the entire American continent in this edition.

The performance of the young people was aligned with the average score of the rest of the participants, which was a significant achievement considering the high level of requirement of the tests, whose evaluations reach university standards, as stated by the Deputy Minister for the Communalization of Science for Production, Danmarys Hernández.

“We won an honorable mention for our dear Gabriela Montilla, a student at the National University of Nanotechnology Science, who participated in these Olympics and also achieved a high performance, where we almost brought us, of course, our medals,” said the spokeswoman in a press release.

The rest of the delegation consisted of students Angélica Ferrer, 17; Yervi Ángel Sánchez and Luis Bermúdez, both 16; and Mateo Marín, 14 years old.

Deputy Minister Danmarys Hernández added that this is an unforgettable experience that not only consolidates the efforts and dedication of young people, but also formally outlines the institutional path for the country's next participations in the areas of biology and basic sciences.

He also pointed out that the approach to biology in these highly complex competencies involved the execution of practical field activities with high scientific performance. “I am a biologist by profession and we have been accompanying them, as well as from the authorities of the Republic, but also from a technical point of view,” she said.

He explained that the organizing committee of the Olympics positively evaluated the performance of the Venezuelan representation, formally transmitting that the performance of the young people was extraordinary in the practical component, also highlighting their collaborative spirit.

Hernández also mentioned that students had no opportunity to exchange information with each other, under any circumstances during the development of the tests. “They participated, they did not allow them to use artificial intelligence, they participated with the technological implements that the same organization shared with them and presented two practical tests, both in the animal area and in the plant and plant area.”

This international debut positions the talent of Venezuelan youth in scenarios of high global demand and validates the impact of policies for the massification of knowledge. The success achieved by these five ambassadors opens the door to a new generation of researchers, demonstrating that the Venezuelan scientific hotbed has the necessary potential to measure itself against the most rigorous academic standards in the world.
