The national beach tennis delegation won gold and bronze medals at the Pan-American Championship, held for the first time in Cuiabá, Brazil, and became the only foreign nation that managed to climb the podium in the competition.
The result takes on a special dimension considering the dominance of the host delegation, which won 43 of the 45 medals contested, with a large delegation of 84 athletes, while Venezuela faced the championship with 40 representatives, the same number of athletes as Chile, Puerto Rico participated with 38 athletes and Aruba with 28.
The first great joy came in the women's under-14 doubles category, where Amanda Franco and Loisanna Monzón were proclaimed Pan American champions after defeating Brazil's Marcela Leme and Maria Nunes in the grand final.
The Venezuelan duo showed confidence in the decisive moments and closed the match with partials of 4-2 and 5-3, to make the national anthem sound, according to a press release from the Ministry of Popular Power for Sports.
“We dreamed of this moment together, we are grateful for the support, for the encouragement given to us by our colleagues as a bar. This triumph is for our colleague Gaby for everything that happened in the double earthquake, for all those that are missing, this is for Venezuela,” said Monzón.
The second Venezuelan medal came in the men's doubles division, where Carlos Jesús and Eduardo Garay won the bronze medal.
The national pair faced Brazilians Davi Ballerini and Henrique Barros and won with scores of 6-3 and 6-4, thus securing a new place on the continental podium.
