Dr. Ismardo Bonalde, a Venezuelan physicist, was awarded the prestigious Bernard Coqblin International Physics Prize 2026, for his contributions to the field of Strongly Correlated Electron Systems (SCES).
The award, which pays homage to the memory of the famous French scientist Bernard Coqblin, exclusively rewards researchers who manage to consolidate vibrant and dynamic scientific activity in developing countries where this area of molecular physics has no previous formal deployment.
Bonalde currently works as principal investigator and head of the Laboratory of Low Temperatures and Liquefaction of the Physics Center of the Venezuelan Institute for Scientific Research (IVIC), in addition to being a member of the Academy of Physical, Mathematical and Natural Sciences (ACFIMAN).
The scientist's advanced research work has been the fundamental piece in placing Venezuela on the global map of quantum physics, the study of superconductivity and the physics of low temperatures.
The official award ceremony will take place during the International Conference on Strongly Correlated Electron Systems, the most important event of this discipline at a global level, which will be held from September 27 to October 2 of this year at the Toyama International Conference Center, located in Japan.
