The Venezuelan sugar industry supplies approximately 60% of the domestic market, and the consumption of this product in Venezuela is between 600,000 and 650,000 tons per year, combined with a sustained growth of around 20% in the sector over the last 4 years. The data were provided by the president of the National Federation of Sugarcane Farmers of Venezuela (Fesoca), José Ricardo Álvarez.
He said that sugar producers estimate to produce between 370,000 and 380,000 tons of sugar this year, depending on the yield of the cane. Álvarez asserted that if the rate of sugar production is maintained, in 3 years the sector could cover 90% of the nation's consumption, according to a national private sector.
Recently, at the headquarters of the International Center for Productive Investment (CIIP), in Caracas, an investment agreement was signed for the modernization of three sugar mills and the expansion of an additional 30,000 hectares of cane cultivation, to promote the reactivation of the installed capacity of the national agro-industry.
