The President of the Bolivarian Republic of Venezuela, Nicolás Maduro, celebrated this Thursday the election of the American Robert F. Prévost, starting today, Leo XIV, as the new Pope of the Catholic Church.

“We raise our prayers for his pontificate, asking God to enlighten and strengthen him in the lofty mission that has been entrusted to him to serve the People of God and all humanity,” said the Venezuelan Head of State through his Telegram channel.

The Dignitary expressed his desire that Leo XIV's pastoral guidance “will continue the valuable legacy of His Holiness Francis, Jorge Bergoglio. We are confident that the important advances made under his wise leadership will bear fruit, now under the new leadership.”

In this regard, he raised his request “for the prompt realization of the causes of canonization of our blesseds, Mother Carmen Rendiles and Dr. José Gregorio Hernández. Their exemplary lives and proven holiness are beacons of hope and inspiration for our Venezuelan people, who fervently yearn to see them raised to the altars,” emphasized Maduro.

“From Venezuela, the Catholic and Christian people reaffirm their unwavering commitment to fidelity to Christ and to the Church, in communion with the Holy Father,” he concluded.
