The World Health Organization (WHO) confirmed today that seven cases of the Andean strain of hantavirus among passengers on the MV Hondus cruise ship, raising concern about the possible spread of the virus.

According to a WHO spokesman, the total number of reported cases amounts to nine, including one of the evacuated passengers who tested positive for the virus. Two other cases are suspected of being hantavirus, including the person considered to be the first infected in this outbreak, who died before undergoing medical tests.

The organization indicated that so far there have been three deaths related to the virus. The WHO had yesterday confirmed six cases after the outbreak on the same cruise ship.
