This Wednesday, the World Health Organization (WHO) issued a serious warning about the health situation in the Gaza Strip, which it describes as “catastrophic”, while the entity's representative in occupied Palestine, Rik Peeperkorn, denounces that hospitals are operating at the limit due to a critical shortage of medicines with more than half of the supplies out of stock and a insufficient inflow of aid to cover urgent needs, while malnutrition and hunger continue to devastate the population.
The WHO reported that access to medical equipment and supplies to Gaza remains a major obstacle. Rik Peeperkorn indicated that international doctors are being denied entry and that essential equipment such as intensive care units and anaesthesia machines are being withheld.
The representative of WHO insisted on the urgency of opening multiple crossings into the Gaza Strip and the simplification of access procedures. He regretted that the supposed arrival of more humanitarian aid is not materializing or is happening “too slowly”.
