The Director General of the World Health Organization (WHO), Tedros Adhanom Gebreyesus, reiterated the need for an immediate ceasefire in the Gaza Strip to comply with humanitarian actions in the area.

In a note from the Xinhua news agency, Adhanom Gebreyesus described as “significant” the resolution adopted at the special session of the WHO Executive Council on the health situation in the occupied Palestinian territories, calling for the immediate, sustained and unimpeded passage of humanitarian aid in Gaza, including medical personnel.

However, this resolution states that the Director General must report on the health effects in the area, an action that, according to Adhanom Gebreyesus, is made difficult by the constant attacks and bombings that are taking place in Gaza by Israel.

“The only real remedy is an immediate truce,” he added.

According to data provided by the director of WHO, this year alone, there have been more than 1,200 attacks against health workers, patients, hospitals, clinics and ambulances in 19 countries, causing nearly 700 deaths and more than 1,100 injuries.

In this regard, he recalled that attacks on health are considered a violation of international humanitarian law.

To date, more than 18,700 Palestinians have been killed by the attacks on Gaza, most of whom are children and women.
