Venezuelan Willson Contreras won the American Major League Major League Player of the Week award from May 18 to
24.
The
initialist, from the Boston Red Sox, showed an astronomical offensive line of .458/.480/.875 for OPS
of 1,355 over the period described. He also recorded
eight hits, including two home runs and an equal number of three-pointers, with eight
runs pushed and five scored, according to the Venezuelan Professional Baseball League press report.
Contreras is the second time in his 11-season career in the
big leagues that he has won the Player of the Week. The previous time was
between June 2 and 8, 2017 with the Chicago Cubs, in the
National League.
The
Carabobeño, meanwhile, is the second Venezuelan to achieve the distinction this
campaign, after Ildemaro Vargas did it between April 18 and 26 with the Arizona
D-Backs, in the National Championship.
The Puerto Cabello native kicked off Tuesday with an active eight-game hit streak, the sixth longest of his career as a grandeliga. It compiles stratospheric averages of .452/.469/.903 for OPS of 1.372 with three roundups and 10 drives during the chain, which began on May 16.
At the beginning
of last week, the 34-year-old slugger became just the
eleventh tricolor of all time to compile at least 10 double-digit home runs.
In addition to
Willson Contreras, he was awarded the National Championship as the Player of the Week
Ketel Marte, the Dominican waiter for the D-Backs.
