With a keynote speech by the Deputy Minister for Africa of the Ministry of Popular Power for Foreign Affairs, Yuri Pimentel, this Monday began the 20th World Week of Africa in Venezuela, at the National Experimental Polytechnic University of the Bolivarian National Armed Forces (Unefa).
The activity was attended by the Deputy Minister of University Management of the Ministry of Popular Power for University Education, María Eugenia Piñero Granadillo; the rector of Unefa, Ricardo Nicodemo Ramos; and representatives of the Diplomatic Corps of Africa accredited in Caracas, as well as students from various universities in the country.
During his speech, Deputy Minister Pimentel took a tour of the history of the African continent, highlighting the struggles of its peoples against European colonialism.
He recalled that World Africa Week in Venezuela was an initiative of Commander Hugo Chávez, around the date of May 25, which is Africa Day, “and for 20 years it has been celebrated to show us the relationship, the history that unites us, the common history of struggle, of aspirations, that we have with the African continent, with mother Africa, as our commander Hugo Chávez called her.”
He pointed out that this 20th edition, on instructions from President Nicolás Maduro and through an agreement between the Foreign Ministry and the Ministry of University Education, will be held in universities.
“We started today with this paper at UNEFA, but during all these days there will be presentations with the African Diplomatic Corps at different universities (...) to continue showing that historical unity that we have with the African continent, but which unfortunately sometimes we do not know. We must deepen that knowledge and well, I hope that today we have done a grain of sand in that direction,” said the Deputy Minister.
For her part, Deputy Minister Piñero stressed the importance of “sharing this information with the entire Venezuelan university community. It is important to develop these activities in the training process.”
He explained that the presentations during the 20th World Week of Africa will be held at the Bolivarian universities of Venezuela, the International of Communications, Arts, Tourism and Hydrocarbons, among other houses of study, so that “it can be shown to the entire Venezuelan university community that Africa is a continent with power, which represents our Mother Country, our Mother Africa and that since the fact of connection we are moving towards a more humane humanity and towards a university linked to international events, framed by a multipolar and multicentric world”.
World Africa Week represents a space for integration and peace with the rest of the world's nations. It was created with the purpose of making visible the work carried out by African communities, in addition to promoting the coexistence and culture of this continent made up of 55 nations.
