At least 27 prisoners in the Machala prison, in Ecuador, were hanged to death, in addition to dozens of other deaths that occurred inside prisons in the South American country, according to national authorities.

According to the National Service for Comprehensive Care for Adults Deprived of Liberty and Adolescent Offenders, the events correspond to a “reorganization of those deprived of their liberty in the new maximum security prison”.

Hours earlier, in the same Machala prison, four other prisoners were found dead and 33 more were injured, under the same argument of “reorganization”.

In September, a confrontation between inmates in the Machala prison left 15 dead, including a custodian. At the beginning of November, in two of the main and most dangerous prisons in Ecuador, the Litoral Penitentiary and the Guayas Regional Penitentiary, both in Guayaquil, eight inmates were reported dead.
