Heavy monsoon rains in Nepal left at least 49 dead and 10 missing, national authorities said Sunday.
The most affected district is Ilam, in the mountainous east of the country, where at least 37 people died in landslides, as confirmed by the district chief, Sunita Nepal, who added that search and rescue operations are continuing.
Another 12 deaths were recorded in different regions of the country, including victims of lightning, traffic accidents and new landslides, police spokesman Binod Ghimire said.
The Government declared two days of national mourning this Sunday to discourage displacement, given the expectation that thousands of people would return to Kathmandu after celebrating Dashain, the most important festival in Nepal.
