The president of Guatemala, Bernardo Arévalo, after assuming power last Sunday, January 14, said that in the coming years “the temptation to confront and increase differences will be recurrent,” reported the Prensa Latina website.

He indicated that change “can be difficult” and that he will need to make complex decisions and will face moments of doubt.

“Today, four years are beginning that will be marked by obstacles that we cannot imagine at this time,” said the president.

Arévalo added that we must take responsibility for the present, which poses important challenges, and we cannot “take our eyes off the mirror so as not to see our painful realities”.

In addition, among other things, it committed itself to indigenous peoples and rejected discrimination.

Bernardo Arévalo took power in Guatemala in the early hours of the morning, Caracas time, after a long delay in the protocol in Congress to elect his board of directors.

For months, a climate of tension has been maintained in the Central American nation with the Public Ministry, which sought to prevent the now acting president from taking office.
