The ambassador of the Bolivarian Republic of Venezuela to UN-Geneva, Alexander Yánez, rejected the inactivity of the High Commissioner for Human Rights (DDHH), Volker Türk, in the face of violent acts sponsored by the extreme right after the electoral process in which Nicolás Maduro was re-elected, and in which 27 Venezuelans lost their lives.
During his speech at the 20th Meeting - 57th Regular Session of the Human Rights Council, he pointed out that “the fascist right in Venezuela tried to generate a wave of violence to implode institutions based on ignorance of the electoral results”; using “criminal gangs” aimed at attacking people, burning and destroying public health, security and education institutions; for this reason he assured that “they were not peaceful protests”.
He added that Venezuela presented the evidence to the High Commissioner for Human Rights, “who flagrantly ignored them. A complicity that we must not tolerate in this Council and we denounce it”.
Yánez criticized the system for its inaction in the face of these events in which 27 Venezuelans, “mostly humble community leaders, lost their lives. They are non-existent for the exquisite human rights system, which is less efficient when it comes to the poor.”
Finally, he recalled that “the duty of States is to ensure a balanced functioning of this council, in no case to endorse aggressions against the institutionality and sovereignty of peoples”.
