The National Assembly (AN) held a special session this Monday, June 22, 2026 to commemorate the Bicentennial of the Panamanian Amphictyonic Congress. The day began with the screening of a short informative video and the approval by an obvious majority of the agenda by deputies, regional legislators and councilors. The unique point of the meeting consisted in the development of the orderly speech to honor this anniversary.
The speech was given by historian Alejandro López Rodríguez, professor at the Central University of Venezuela (UCV) and president of the Simon Bolivar Study Center. When taking up the speaker's gallery, the academic stated that “this meeting has immeasurable historical value” because it is the first meeting of free nations in the contemporary era to agree on common interests. The speaker was greeted with applause by the parliamentary authorities.
During his speech, López Rodríguez explained that the Congress of Panama in 1826 represented the highest achievement of the project of union devised by Francisco de Miranda and led by the Liberator Simon Bolivar. The specialist linked this milestone to the political identity that began on April 19, 1810, which determined the beginning of the end of 300 years of Spanish colonialism on the continent.
The historian recalled that the ideal of American unity had already been embodied since the birth of the country in the stanzas of the National Anthem and in the Federal Constitution of 1811. The solemn parliamentary event, which reaffirmed the ties of sovereignty in the region, was broadcast in real time for all citizens through the official digital platforms of the Legislative Branch.
