The National Assembly (AN) unanimously approved the Law to Guarantee Freedoms of Navigation and Commerce against Piracy, Blockades and Other International Illicit Acts, during the extraordinary session held on Tuesday.

The law establishes a legal framework to protect the country's commercial operations and punish those who participate in or facilitate acts of piracy in Venezuelan waters. The text incorporates provisions of international instruments, including the 1958 Geneva Convention on the High Seas and the 1988 Convention against Unlawful Acts in Maritime Navigation.

The law provides for sentences of up to 20 years in prison, in addition to fines calculated in large quantities of bolivars, applicable to natural, legal and foreign persons involved in the offences established. Its main objective is to protect the national economy from actions considered predatory and aimed at compromising the country's freedom of navigation and trade.

Before its approval, the Plenary Chamber held the second discussion of the article, consisting of 15 articles, which received the unanimous support of the deputies present.
