The Secretary General of the United Nations (UN), António Guterres, opens the sessions of the General Assembly on its 80th anniversary, where he assured that a permanent ceasefire is needed in Gaza and urged member countries to ensure peace as an obligation.

Guterres said that “peace is our main obligation, yet today wars are raging, in a way that we had promised never to allow”.

“We must all work together for a ceasefire, providing lasting peace in accordance with the (International) Charter, United Nations resolutions and International Law.”

Guterres also stressed that “impunity is the mother of chaos and has generated some of the most atrocious conflicts of our time.”

“What people are experiencing in Gaza is approaching a third year of delinquencies, affirming that it is the result of decisions that distance humanity,” he emphasized, adding that the International Court of Justice has demanded mandatory measures on the prevention of the punishment of crime in the Palestinian State and their application there.

“we need universal protections, common rules on all platforms, because no express one can be above the law, no machine should decide who lives or dies,” added the Secretary General.
