Apure producers activate preventive measures in the face of the impact of El Niño

The cattle and buffalo unions of the state of Apure have initiated a contingency plan during the rainy season, so they are adjusting their operations to face the drought period predicted by the El Niño phenomenon.

The scheme designed by the producers is organized into three lines of action, since it prioritizes the reserve of pastures to guarantee food in the critical phase, it also incorporates the adaptation of water sources to ensure continuous supply and finally contemplates the adjustment of the animal load on the farms in order to avoid pressure on the ground, according to a press release from Venezolana de Televisión.

The executive director of Criabúfalos de Venezuela, Julio César Vargas, indicated that climate forecasts make it necessary to prepare the sector immediately, so the current rainy season is the right time to gather resources.

Vargas specified that keeping water available and in adequate conditions is essential to meet the basic requirements of cattle and buffaloes, since the scarcity generated by the drought compromises their stability.

The director of the region's Cattle Farmers Association, Manuel Jerónimo Solórzano, said that the union incorporates technical tools such as regenerative livestock farming and forage conservation through silage and henolage, thus strengthening the capacity to respond to climate variation.

Industry representatives warned that the drop in river levels will bring forward the availability of natural pastures to September and October, so producers will rely strictly on accumulated forage reserves.
