Argentina recorded inflation of 20.6% in January

In January 2024, Argentina's Consumer Price Index (CPI) was 20.6%, reported the National Institute of Statistics and Censuses (INDEC), according to the Pagina12 website.

It indicates that although it is slightly lower than the December figure, when it marked 25.5%, year-on-year inflation is 254.2% and mentions the items that registered the highest increases.

He clarified that the impact that the increase in transport will have on Argentine pockets is still missing.

In this regard, INDEC points out that the division with the highest monthly increase in January 2024 was Miscellaneous Goods and Services with 44.4%, accompanied by Transportation with $26.3. Third, it is closely followed by Communication with 25.1%.

In transport, in addition, the effect of ticket increases throughout the country has not yet been recorded, as a result of the removal of subsidies with which the government of Javier Milei seeks to punish the provinces for not having supported the Omnibus Law in Congress.

Even so, the Food and Non-Alcoholic Beverages category had the highest impact on the monthly variation in all regions of the country.

The region with the highest monthly increase was Patagonia (24.2%), followed by Cuyo (22.3%).

Last Tuesday, in the first Market Expectations Survey (REM) of the year conducted by the Central Bank (BCRA), private consulting firms estimated inflation of 21.9% for January.

This inflation estimate was 3.1 percentage points below the REM at the end of December.

For February, analysts expect monthly inflation to be 18%, with a decrease of 0.2 points and for the whole year of 227%.

On Wednesday, the Buenos Aires Bureau of Statistics reported that January inflation reached 21.7%, in line with the 21.1% recorded in December.

With regard to the Total Basic Basket (CBT), it rose 27 points in December, so a typical family group needed to have an income of $495,798 in order not to be considered in a situation of poverty.

Meanwhile, the Basic Food Basket (CBA) rose 30.1%, which determined that the same type of family needed income of $240,678 in order not to fall into destitution.
