The authorities of the Argentine city of Bahía Blanc ratified this Friday, March 07, the state of emergency due to floods, registered due to a devastating storm that hit the region and has caused serious damage and chaos to all types of infrastructure, especially in several hospitals.

At noon this Friday, 07, municipal authorities reported the death of a woman who died trapped by floods “on public roads, on Paroissien and Rawson streets,” local media reported, according to the Russian Today website.

In a note from the SWI portal, it states that in the afternoon, the number of deaths rose to six, according to a statement from the mayor's office, which indicated that at least five died on public roads.

“So far, more than 200 millimeters have fallen and the Department of Information and Monitoring of Alerts and Emergencies of the Province of Buenos Aires has just reported that storms will continue over our city (...) with an additional cumulative estimate of between 50 and 100 millimeters more,” the municipality explained.

It also reported that 40 families have been evacuated and all the calls for assistance on the emergency telephone lines have been answered, but there are so many that there could be a saturation.

The authorities warned that the situation could lead to “the existence of a greater number of fatalities”, due to “the magnitude of the climate disaster” that has been subjecting Bahía Blanca over the past few hours.

Earlier, it was reported that the natural disaster has led to the evacuation of dozens of families from their homes.

In addition, classes, transportation services and all kinds of activities were suspended, the local airport was closed and electricity was cut off.

“The population is strongly requested to stay safe in their homes,” warned the municipality of Bahía Blanca in a statement in which it reported that the National Weather Service expects new storms this Friday.
