The embassies of the member countries of the Association of Southeast Asian Nations (ASEAN) in Venezuela: Indonesia, Vietnam, Malaysia and Thailand, held a commemorative ceremony on the occasion of the 57th anniversary of the founding of the block, at which they presented a floral offering before the sarcophagus of the Liberator Simon Bolivar, in the National Pantheon of Caracas.

The protocol ceremony was attended by the Deputy Minister for Asia, the Middle East and Oceania of the Ministry of People's Power for Foreign Affairs, Tatiana Pugh Moreno, and representatives of the diplomatic corps accredited in Caracas.

ASEAN, a regional intergovernmental organization that promotes cooperation and integration among its ten member States in Southeast Asia, was created on August 8, 1967 with the signing of the ASEAN Declaration (Bangkok Declaration) by its founding member States.

Currently, the member States of the Association are: Brunei, Cambodia, Indonesia, Lao, Malaysia, Myanmar, Philippines, Singapore, Thailand and Vietnam.

The ASEAN Secretariat is based in Jakarta, Indonesia. Currently, the presidency of the Association is held by Lao.

Lao's presidency in ASEAN this year focuses on promoting regional community building, strengthening the connectivity and resilience of the block, under the slogan “ASEAN: Improving Connectivity and Resilience”.

Thanks to the outstanding achievements of ASEAN over the years, the bloc has become the fifth largest economy in the world and the third largest in Asia, which has reaffirmed its role before the international community as a leading partner in trade and investment.

It is expected that ASEAN will continue to promote cooperation to anticipate revolutionary changes, such as the circular economy, digital transformation, energy transition and adaptation to climate change towards a prosperous and sustainable community, following ASEAN Vision 2045.

In 2019, the Head of Mission of the Venezuelan Embassy in Indonesia was accredited to ASEAN, thus becoming the first Representative of Caracas accredited to this multilateral body.
