China called on the United States to abandon the “Chinese threat” argument to justify actions aimed at gaining control over Greenland, amid the tensions generated by Washington's plans for that Arctic territory.
The spokesman for the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, Guo Jiakun, stated that “international law, based on the objectives and principles of the Charter of the United Nations, is the basis of the current international order and must be respected.”
He argued that any debate on Greenland must be governed by multilateral rules and by the recognition of the sovereignty of Denmark and the island.
The statement came after the announcement by the President of the United States, Donald Trump, to apply tariffs of 10% starting February 1 to several European countries that rejected Washington's proposal to acquire Greenland. The president anticipated that tariffs will rise to 25% in June and will remain in effect “until an agreement is reached for the acquisition of Greenland by the United States.”
According to what was published on the Telesur web portal, Denmark and the Greenlandic authorities reiterated their opposition to any attempt at appropriation. China's position is compounded by European objections, who consider the US strategy a mechanism of economic pressure in a context of geopolitical disputes.
