This Friday, Brazil's foreign ministry announced the entry of Nigeria as the ninth country to join the BRICS group as a partner state.
“As part of its temporary presidency of BRICS, the Brazilian Government announced on January 17 the formal admission of Nigeria to the group as a partner country. The Brazilian government welcomes the decision of the Nigerian government,” said the Ministry of Foreign Affairs in a statement reviewed by the Sputnik agency.
The BRICS group, initially comprised of Brazil, Russia, India, China, South Africa, expanded with the entry of Saudi Arabia, Egypt, the United Arab Emirates, Ethiopia and Iran on January 1, 2024.
With the accession of Indonesia in January 2025, the association now has 11 full members.
Nigeria thus becomes the ninth country associated with the BRICS, along with Belarus, Bolivia, Kazakhstan, Cuba, Malaysia, Thailand, Uganda and Uzbekistan
