The President of Brazil, Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva, met with State authorities to discuss urgent and definitive measures against climate change, such as requesting international aid due to the fires that have been spreading across the country for more than a month.

The authorities of the Parliament, the Supreme Court and other main bodies of the Brazilian State, as well as scientists and academics who study climate change, Lula said that nature decided to show its claws and tells us that either we take good care of it or it will not endure such a lack of responsibility.

The president said that the main cause of the fires that occurred in more than 50 percent of the territory is the biggest drought recorded in decades. He also explained the suspicions regarding the flames caused with a “criminal” nature.

“In Rio de Janeiro, 20 people were arrested for setting fire to vegetation. We are here signing a climate pact with the presidents of the House, Senate and STF,” the president added at the meeting.
