Around 14,000 women from the Landless Rural Workers Movement (MST) in Brazil have been mobilized from Sunday, March 8 to Thursday, March 12 in various states of the country to denounce land concentration, the paralysis of agrarian reform and violence against women.

The women of the MST carried out land occupations, political events and training activities in different Brazilian states, actions that coincide with the National Day of Landless Women and the International Women's Day celebrated on Sunday, March 8.

In Rio Grande do Sul, at least 500 women occupied 400 hectares of the State Foundation for Agrarian Research (FEPAGRO) in Sao Gabriel, Telesur said.

The leader Lara Rodrigues, a member of the National Directorate of the MST, stated that the movement accepts the proposed settlement in the areas of FEPAGRO, and demands that the state government and the National Institute for Colonization and Agrarian Reform (INCRA) resume negotiations to resettle peasant families affected by the floods of May 2024 camping in Rio Grande do Sul.

The MST also seeks to allocate about ten hectares to create a space for reception and income generation for women. The Sao Gabriel region is a reference in the fight for land, housing 10 settlements with more than 700 families, whose food production is allocated, in part, to the Food Purchase Program (PAA).
