The Office of the Attorney General of the Republic of Brazil (PGR) presented before the Supreme Federal Court (STF) indictments against former President Jair Bolsonaro and 33 other people for the attempt to break the constitutional thread through a coup d'etat.

Jair Bolsonaro is involved in encouraging and carrying out acts against the three branches of government and the democratic rule of law through an armed criminal organization.

He will also be charged with attempted violent abolition of the democratic rule of law, as well as for damages resulting from violence and serious threat against federal property, and with considerable harm to the victim and deterioration of protected assets.

According to the Public Prosecutor's Office, finding no flaws in the electoral system, those involved maintained the discourse of fraud and maintained militancy with camps set up in front of Army headquarters in various capitals of the country.

“On another front, the criminal organization pressured the Army commander and the high command, drafting letters and agitating colleagues in favor of force actions on the political scene to prevent the elected president (Lula) from taking office. The complaint points to the drafting of acts to formalize the rupture of the constitutional order, including the arrest of STF ministers,” the PGR added in its statement.

According to prosecutors, the investigations revealed the alleged coup operation, which even contemplated the death of President Lula da Silva and elected vice-president of the Republic, Geraldo Alckmin, as well as that of a Supreme Court judge. The plan allegedly had the consent of then-President Jair Bolsonaro, the PGR said.

“The violence of January 8 was the last attempt. The organization promoted the mobilization of a group of people in front of the Army Headquarters in Brasilia, calling for military intervention in politics. The participants traveled the route accompanied and escorted by the military police of the Federal District, invading and destroying the headquarters of the three branches of government. The episode caused more than 20 million reais worth of damage,” he said.

The complaints will be analyzed by the rapporteur of the case in the Supreme Federal Court, Minister Alexandre de Moraes.
