The Supreme Court of Brazil ordered this Tuesday, November 25, immediate imprisonment for the beginning of serving the sentence of more than 27 years in prison against former President Jair Bolsonaro, accused of leading a plot to overthrow Brazilian democracy, after exhausting all his appeals, the HispanTV website reported.

Judge Alexandre de Moraes determined that all of the defense's appeals had been exhausted, declaring the guilty verdict as final.

The sentence includes crimes such as leading an armed criminal organization and planning the violent abolition of the democratic order, in addition to conspiring to assassinate President Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva, Vice President Geraldo Alckmin and Judge de Moraes himself.

Bolsonaro, 70, was transferred to the headquarters of the Federal Police in Brasilia, where he will remain isolated from other inmates. Its 12-square-meter cell has a bed, private bathroom, air conditioning, television and desk.

The former president had been under house arrest since August, until his arrest on Saturday, after trying to break the electronic ankle brace he was wearing.

Outside the police headquarters, supporters and detractors gathered showing both support and rejection, some demanding their release and others celebrating their imprisonment.

Bolsonaro's defense assures that he will continue to file requests for house arrest due to his state of health, although the Court has previously rejected this option. De Moraes emphasized that “there is no legal possibility of any other appeal.”

The case marks a historic point in Brazil, sanctioning the former president and several of his allies for trying to subvert the democratic order after the electoral defeat of 2022 and for planning acts of violence that directly threatened the country's stability.
