This Thursday, March 13, Minister Cristiano Zanin, of the Supreme Court of Brazil, scheduled for March 25, the trial of the complaint against former President Jair Bolsonaro and 33 other people for participation in a coup attempt.

This analysis will be carried out in the first chamber of the Supreme Federal Court (STF), reported the Prensa Latina website.

The Attorney General's Office (Attorney General's Office) asked this Thursday to indict Bolsonaro and seven others accused of the violent plot, after the 2022 elections.

After dismissing the defense arguments asking to close the complaint, Attorney General Paulo Gonet demanded that the charges against the former head of the Executive and the others in the first group of the coup plot be accepted.

For Gonet, the Attorney General's Office, with the complaint, “presented its conviction about the typical framework of the conduct investigated, the materiality of the crimes charged and the persuasive elements about the respective authorship”.

He considered that it is “sufficient at this procedural moment, pending the receipt of the complaint and the carrying out of the procedural investigation”.

In addition to the former president, the crucial group consists of Bolsonaro's former assistant in command, Lieutenant Colonel Mauro Cid, a collaborator in the investigation, three former ministers, Alexandre Ramagem (former director general of the Brazilian Intelligence Agency) and Almir Garnier Santos (former commander of the Navy).

According to the Federal Public Ministry, information about the defendants was always obtained at the request of the Federal Police and with a demonstration by the Office of the Attorney General of the Republic, without violating the accusatory principle.

“The complaint describes in detail the criminal acts and their circumstances, explaining in an understandable and individualized way the criminal conduct in theory adopted by each of the defendants,” the prosecutor states in the document.

If the complaint is accepted by the Supreme Court, the defendants become defendants and become criminally responsible for actions in the Superior Court.

Then, the processes move to the investigation phase, consisting of several procedures to investigate everything that happened and the participation of each of those involved in the file.

Testimonies, data and interrogations will be collected at this time. Later, the minister responsible for the case draws up a report.

Although he was declared ineligible by the Superior Electoral Court in October 2023 and also accused of being a coup plotter, Bolsonaro still insists that he will be a candidate in the 2026 elections.
