Bridge collapse in the east of the Netherlands leaves two dead

Two people lost their lives and at least two others suffered serious injuries when a bridge under construction collapsed this Wednesday in the province of Gelderland in the Netherlands.

 

The bridge collapsed during the morning over the Twente Canal in Lochem, a town in the eastern part of the country, leaving people trapped under the rubble, a regional security office in Gelderland reported.

 

A group of workers were building the new bridge when one of its arches broke off, according to Dutch media reports. The Dutch Labour Inspection Office will investigate the accident.

 

Firefighters, paramedics and police officers came to the scene shortly after the incident was reported. The two injured were taken to the hospital and were reported to be out of danger.
