The general secretary of the United Socialist Party of Venezuela (PSUV), Diosdado Cabello Rondón, questioned on Monday the attitude of the hierarchy of the Venezuelan Catholic Church in the face of threats from the United States against the country.
“The Episcopal Conference of the Antilles spoke out against attempts to attack Venezuela. The one here (Venezuelan Episcopal Conference) doesn't say anything. It seems that someone sold him the idea that bombs only affect Chavistas,” Cabello said during a press conference held by the National Directorate of the political organization.
Cabello recalled that the position of the Church is not new and related it to its behavior during the coup d'etat of April 11, 2002. “They are the same people who signed the decree, who went to La Orchila to tell Commander Chávez that he should leave. They haven't changed,” he said.
He considered that the attitude of these church sectors responds to interests aligned with imperialism. “They tried to sabotage the canonization of José Gregorio Hernández, here and in Rome. But the faith of the People could do better,” he said.
Cabello stressed that Venezuela is not alone and that it receives daily expressions of international solidarity. “There are those who believe that a conflict with Venezuela is limited to our territory. They are not reading the story well. Every day we receive requests from people who want to come and defend the Homeland,” he concluded.
