The decision to release people deprived of their liberty for being
involved in acts against the security and peace of the country was taken
unilaterally by the president of the Bolivarian Republic of Venezuela, Nicolás Maduro,
without the mediation of the Catholic Church or any Non-Governmental
Organization (NGO).
This was reported by the general secretary of the United Socialist Party of Venezuela (PSUV), Diosdado Cabello, who indicated that this
resolution of the Head of State was issued since December,
so that by Christmas and New Year some people had already been released from prison.
“All of these decisions were made
unilaterally. The Catholic Church has nothing to do with it, on the contrary, not a single NGO
has anything to do with it. NGOs such as Provea and others, which
every time a release occurs they will charge the relatives as
if they were the ones who achieved the measure, have nothing to do with it,”
he emphasized while stressing that the authorities continue to review
cases to release those who deserve it.
In this regard, he specified that to date more than 400 people have been released and stressed that for these releases, people tried for crimes such as homicide, drug trafficking or pedophilia are not taken into
account.
“There are some people accused of pedophilia and they include them on
a list to be considered,” he revealed.
On the other hand,
he stressed that freed people are not “political prisoners” and recalled that these people “are irresponsible people who don't
mind hurting people, institutions, destroying the State's
infrastructure for a political purpose.”
