Biological Diversity personnel from the Ministry of Popular Power for Ecosocialism and volunteers from the Patanemo Bay community in Puerto Cabello, Carabobo state, are under constant surveillance around a nest made by a cardon turtle (Dermochelys coriacea), about 20 days ago on one of the beaches in the sector.
On April 13, an alert was raised about the possible spawning of a Cardón sea turtle, the largest in the world, on the beaches of Patanemo, a fact that had not occurred for about 9 years, according to reports from Biological Diversity technicians in the region.
To protect eggs from predators, preventive perimeter fencing was established on site, which prevents interrupting the incubation process in the sand.
Specialists indicate that because it was turtle spawning season, the animal arrived at the beaches of Patanemo, where, due to the very peculiar aspect of returning to the place of birth, this time about 20 or 30 years later, it does so in order to leave its eggs, an act that, considering the years that have passed, is an historic event at the environmental level.
Also, the technicians point out, the fact that the turtle has nested in Patanemo is an indicator that the Carabobeña coasts are clean and sufficiently prepared to receive reptiles.
After leaving the eggs, the turtle does not return to the nest with the possibility that it will return again during the spawning season and make its appearance in the same place or close to the most recent spawning site.
