Workshops and talks dedicated to Cuba marked the fifth chapter of the 7th Meeting of Knowledge, Sounds and Flavors “I am Caribbean: From the Land Where the Sun Is Born”, an initiative of the Institute of Performing and Musical Arts that promotes cultural exchange between Caribbean countries.
The activities, held from April 14 to 16 at the headquarters of the Ministry of Popular Power for Culture, demonstrated the historical and cultural ties that unite Venezuela and Cuba, through music, dance and traditional knowledge.
The agenda began with the discussion “Evolution of Cuban Music”, led by researcher Franklin Rojas, who addressed the origins and transformations of the island's main musical genres. Later, the dancer Niurka “Hera” Muros shared techniques and styles of danzón, chachachá, son and bolero with the audience.
During the second day, teachers Douglas Mora and Tomás Fajardo developed a sample of Cuban percussion that included genres such as rumba, yambú and guaguancó, with the active participation of musicians and the public in the performance of traditional instruments.
The closing was given by historian Juan Carlos Báez, who spoke about the evolution of genres such as mambo and Cuban jazz.
Finally, the headquarters of the Ministry of Popular Power for Culture served as the stage to close the cycle of this seventh meeting with an unforgettable concert that integrated all the rhythms related to the countries Colombia, Puerto Rico, the Dominican Republic, Cuba and Venezuela, with the project “Caribbean sings and dances” presented by the musician and researcher Noel Márquez accompanied by Grupo Madera.
