The President of Colombia, Gustavo Petro, read the 52-point joint statement that reaffirms multilateralism as an essential tool to face global challenges at the close of the 4th Summit of the Community of Latin American and Caribbean States (CELAC) and the European Union (EU) held in Santa Marta, Colombia.

Petro, the current head of CELAC, presented the final text and emphasized the need to build common solutions instead of accepting the imposition of one nation on another. “We insist, persist and deepen the view that it is multilaterality that means that diverse nations come together to solve common problems,” said the president quoted by TELESUR.

The document, signed by the 33 CELAC countries and the 27 members of the EU, argues that complex problems such as the climate crisis, poverty and the management of the digital economy cannot be solved by any nation in isolation.

The declaration stresses that cooperation between all States is the only way to guarantee the survival of humanity in the face of existential threats.
