The Minister of People's Power for Foreign Affairs, Yván Gil, on behalf of the Group of Friends in Defense of the Charter of the United Nations (UN), called on Monday for true multilateralism as a path for international relations and coexistence between countries.

During his participation in the plenary session of the Future Summit , held in New York, on the sidelines of the 79th session of the UN General Assembly, the Venezuelan Foreign Minister warned that, “at a time when growing global interconnection requires greater pluralism, the world is witnessing a growing recourse to unilateralism.”

“This trend, marked by isolationist and arbitrary actions, such as the imposition of unilateral coercive measures or the attempt to replace international law with a supposed 'rules-based order', is undermining crucial efforts to address challenges that are common to us,” he criticized.

In this regard, he insisted “that true multilateralism and the application, without double standards, of the principles of the UN Charter, constitute the core of international relations and are necessary for peaceful coexistence between nations”.

He noted that during the negotiations of the “Pact of the Future”, the Group of Friends emphasized the importance of renewing the commitment to the letter and spirit of the UN Charter, stressing that the commitment of countries to strengthening multilateralism is crucial, as well as the preservation of the intergovernmental nature of the Organization, “abstaining from the growing tendency to replace, minimize or equate the central role of States with that of non-State actors who, for the most part, represent the interests of the North”.
