“In 1833, British forces evicted the Argentine population and authorities legitimately established in the Falkland Islands, perpetuating an injustice that ignores the identity and rights of the Argentine people,” recalled the Foreign Minister of the Bolivarian Republic of Venezuela, Yván Gil.
“The occupation of the Malvinas is a flagrant violation of Argentine sovereignty, which has historically claimed its right to this territory” and that respect for the principle of self-determination of peoples is necessary,” reiterated the Minister of People's Power for Foreign Affairs.
He added that the British refusal to comply with the obligation to resolve the dispute by peaceful means and to put an end to colonialism in all its forms is compounded by the continued introduction of unilateral acts by the United Kingdom.
“These actions include the exploration and exploitation of renewable and non-renewable natural resources, which Argentina has consistently rejected,” Gil stressed on the social network Telegram.
He also pointed out that the United Kingdom maintains an unjustified and disproportionate military presence on the islands, with which it regularly carries out maneuvers and exercises, since Argentina does not represent any threat to the United Kingdom.
“The British military presence, in particular, also contradicts General Assembly resolution 41/11 (South Atlantic Zone of Peace and Cooperation), which, among other provisions, calls on States from all other regions,” he said.
The Venezuelan foreign minister joined the international community's call to put an end to this anachronistic situation.
“It's time for the United Kingdom to meet its international obligation to resolve disputes by peaceful means and to end colonialism in all its forms. Venezuela will continue its support for the Argentine people and their fight for the peaceful resolution of the conflict and the return of their legitimate territory,” he said.
