The Minister of Justice and Human Rights of Chile, Jaime Gajardo, said that his Government does not plan to recognize the extremist Edmundo González Urrutia as president of Venezuela, and is willing to resume relations with Caracas.

During an interview with the EFE agency, Gajardo said that “denying the legitimacy” of the Venezuelan elections —in which President Nicolás Maduro was re-elected- and recognizing the opposition leader as president “are two completely different things.”

From Spain, where he is visiting as part of a working tour of Europe, the Chilean official said that Gabriel Boric's Administration is doing the right thing in international terms.

“We will always be available to resume diplomatic relations, because we believe that is the way to have a relationship between countries,” he said.

Relations between Venezuela and Chile broke down after the interventionist actions of the Boric Government against the Bolivarian nation.
