The Chinese Ministry of Commerce announced the entry into force of tariff deposits on various dairy products from the European Union (EU), with rates ranging from 21.9% to 42.7%. The measure, effective as of December 23, affects fresh and processed cheese, curds, blue cheese, as well as certain types of milk and creams.

The decision comes amid trade tensions with the European bloc, which Beijing accuses of unfair practices. The announcement follows the imposition of anti-dumping tariffs on EU pork, effective since December 17 and set at between 4.9% and 19.8%, after a reduction compared to the temporary levies applied since September.

According to the Chinese authorities, the measure responds to an investigation into subsidies granted by the EU to its dairy sector. The preliminary analysis concluded that these supports cause substantial harm to the domestic industry, which motivated the application of the new tariffs.

The China Dairy Industry Association had requested a review of European imports, arguing that state aid distorts the market. With this step, Beijing seeks to protect its producers and balance competition against community subsidies.

For its part, the European Commission rejected the findings of the investigation. Spokesman Olof Gill called the measures unfounded and based on questionable allegations, anticipating a new chapter in the trade dispute between Brussels and Beijing.
