The spokesman for the Chinese Ministry of Foreign Affairs, Guo Jiakun, said on Tuesday that the kidnapping of President Nicolás Maduro and First Lady Cilia Flores by the United States constitutes an act that violates international law and the sovereignty of Venezuela.

“The United States took control of a country's president by force,” Guo said.

Guo Jiakun also referred to the January 3 attack, when U.S. forces bombed Venezuelan military units, civilian areas and infrastructure, an action that caused numerous victims and led to the arrest of the head of state.

China is deeply shocked and strongly condemns the brazen use of force by the United States against a sovereign state and the action taken against its president,” he emphasized.

The spokesman stressed that Washington used force against a sovereign country and executed the arrest of the Venezuelan leader outside any legal framework. He added that China supports Venezuela in defending its sovereignty, dignity and legitimate rights.

The spokesman indicated that Beijing is willing to coordinate efforts with the international community to protect the Charter of the United Nations, preserve the fundamental principles of coexistence between States and support justice and equity in the international system, Telesur reported.
