The spokeswoman for the Chinese Foreign Ministry, Mao Ning, said that Beijing “opposes any external interference in the internal affairs of Venezuela under any pretext.”
The official explained that her country “has always opposed unilateral sanctions without basis in international law or authorization from the United Nations Security Council.” In this regard, he urged the United States to revoke restrictive measures against Venezuela and to contribute to initiatives that promote peace and regional development.
“We call on the United States to lift its illegal unilateral sanctions and do more to promote peace, stability and development in Latin America and the Caribbean,” Mao Ning added.
In August, US President Donald Trump authorized a US military deployment in the Caribbean with the objective of combating drug trafficking. Venezuela denounced this operation as a threat and as an attempt to promote a change of government in the country.
In recent weeks, Beijing has reiterated its rejection of what it defines as “interference in the internal affairs of Venezuela” and has expressed its opposition to “any attempt to undermine peace and stability in Latin America and the Caribbean”.
