Last Tuesday, the National Liberation Army (ELN) announced that it will wait until August 23 for the Government of Colombia to remove the organization from the list of Organized Armed Groups (GAO), and thus attend an extraordinary meeting with the State delegation to resume peace talks.

The statement details that “the presidential decree to remove the ELN from the GAO list should have been issued in June 2023, we have never received any explanation for the reasons for not having done so.”

“Despite this non-compliance, and for the sake of continuing to reaffirm our will for peace, we are willing to wait until August 23 for the decree to be made public,” underlines the letter published in X.

It also highlights that the ELN will not carry out offensive operations against the Military Forces, Police and security agencies of the Colombian State, as proof of its desire for peace. However, he affirms that, if his units were attacked or if the Army threatened his positions, he would use the right to self-defense.
