Colombia: Government of Petro to present draft Statutory Law on Education

Last Wednesday, the Colombian Minister of Education, Aurora Vergara Figueroa, declared that the Government of President Gustavo Petro will open dialogue scenarios for the entire education sector with the purpose of building consensus and moving forward with the Education Reform Act.

Before the end of the legislative term, Vergara Figueroa confirmed that they will submit the initiative to the Legislature again next semester.

Through a message released on social networks, he said that “from the Government we have the will to continue the draft statutory law in the hope of consolidating a great national agreement for education.”

The head of education stressed that the debate on this issue does not allow for more waiting and that "Colombia requires new education laws and sufficient state investment to bring universal education to the country as a strategy to generate sustainable development, equity and territorial peace”.
