Last Sunday, with a total of 26 seats, the Historical Pact swept the Colombian Senate elections, held on March 8, and is consolidating itself as the country's first political force.

The left-wing coalition won 4.4 million votes (22.7% of the total), surpassing its 2022 mark by 1.5 million. This result gives him 25 seats per closed list plus an additional one for the indigenous constituency, with Martha Peralta.

President Gustavo Petro's party won in 12 of the 32 departments, with key victories in Bogotá, Valle del Cauca, Atlántico and the Pacific region.

The Democratic Center, of the father of Colombian paramilitarism, Álvaro Uribe, came in second place with 17 senators (three million votes), four more than in 2022.

The Uribista party won in Antioquia, Casanare, Meta and Santander, although the right wing suffered a dispersion of votes that benefited the Historical Pact.

In this regard, presidential candidate Iván Cepeda starts as the favorite for May and could hope to build legislative majorities with the support of sectors of the Liberal, Green, Conservative Party and The U.
