This Sunday, Colombia will hold legislative elections to form the Congress for the period 2026-2030, a day that will mark the political landscape before the presidential elections on May 31.
The vote will measure the strength of each block in the Senate and House of Representatives and will anticipate the orientation of the alliances that will influence the national contest, Sputnik reported.
The result will serve as a thermometer of the balance between the main political currents in a context of tensions over the reforms promoted by President Gustavo Petro, whose term of office ends on August 7. The current legislative composition, which emerged in 2022, maintains a fragmented picture that has forced the executive to negotiate changing support throughout the period.
In the Senate, the Historic Pact comes first with 20 of the 108 seats, followed by the Conservative Party with 15, the Liberal Party with 14, the Green Alliance-Centro Esperanza coalition and the Democratic Center with 13 each, Radical Change with 11 and the Party of the U with 10. In the Chamber of Deputies, liberals have 32 seats, while the Historic Pact and conservatives have 25 each. The Democratic Center and Radical Change has 16 seats per party.
A Guarumo and EcoAnalytic survey ranked the Historical Pact as the force with the highest intention of voting for the Senate, with 27.1%. The Democratic Center appears at 20.3%, while the Liberal, Conservative and U parties register lower numbers, but are still competitive. The projections indicate that no group would achieve its own majority, which suggests a new period of parliamentary agreements for the approval of the reforms.
