Colombia suspends energy sales to Ecuador after tariffs imposed by far-right Noboa

The Government of Colombia announced the suspension of the sale of electricity to Ecuador and the imposition of 30% tariffs on 20 Ecuadorian products, in response to President Daniel Noboa's decision to apply a “security” rate of 30% to Colombian imports.
The decisions were confirmed by Colombia's Ministries of Commerce, Industry and Tourism and Mines and Energy, and mark an escalation in commercial and diplomatic tension between the two countries. The intersection of measures impacts bilateral exchange and regional energy supply.
“Given the current conditions of the electricity system, the government of Gustavo Petro decided to temporarily suspend electricity transactions with Ecuador, a preventive measure aimed at ensuring the security and reliability of the supply in the country,” the Ministry warned in a post on social networks.
Quito justified the measure because of an alleged lack of support from Bogotá in the fight against drug trafficking, and for this reason it will impose tariffs on Colombian imports starting February 1.
