Colombia: Trial began against Álvaro Uribe for bribery and procedural fraud

This Thursday, the father of Colombian paramilitarism, Álvaro Uribe, faces trial against him for the crimes of bribery and procedural fraud, being the first former president to respond criminally to justice.

The case that has taken more than a decade to reach the courts and Judge Sandra Liliana Heredia is leading the process and must determine if the Prosecutor's Office has sufficient evidence to support that Uribe turned to lawyer Diego Cadena in 2018 to obtain testimony on his behalf from people who were in prisons.

To obtain these testimonies, Uribe would have incurred bribes to those deprived of their liberty, funding that would have been provided by Cadena, and would have promised them prison benefits, Telesur said.
